SAD & ASIAN is a Facebook community for female-identifying or genderqueer artists and creatives of Asian descent. The group, founded by Esther Fan and Olivia Park at RISD, exceeds 5,000 members worldwide and is a place to not only share work and job opportunities, but also operates as a space for support and learning.
With the rise of social media, the landscape of artist collectives has shifted in an unprecedented way - artists who share common values and aims are no longer limited by geography, education, age, or status. But what do these nebulous communities actually look like? Who are the real people behind them? And, more importantly, how do they want us to view them?
By photographing them in this aggressive and loud lighting style, it is my aim to depict these people as having a power that has historically been denied through visual representations of submissiveness. Still, my project is largely collaborative - I ask how a subject would like to be seen and what part of themselves they would like to share. For some, it is a matter of power and, for others, a matter of disguise. This mini-blog is where I will be sharing some of the people I have the privilege to encounter. Their links to portfolios and social media can be found by clicking on their mediums underneath each of their names.
NOTE: If you are a member of SAD & ASIAN and would like to get in touch, please feel free to reach out via my contact page. This project is ongoing and I would love to have as many people as possible be a part of it. If you are traveling through NYC, let me know ahead of time. Hope to hear from you! 2017.
